Brockmoor Bugle - December 2016

Merry Christmas one and all! As I write our December update we're just completed our Brierley Hill Carol Service. I'm so proud of our child choristers and the outstanding support offered to them by Mrs Lester and Mrs Hickman. The event was truly spellbinding. It's time like this that school is at its most magical. The children have a spring in their step and the sense of anticipation is almost palpable.

This is probably our busiest two weeks in school so please be patient with us as we strain every sinew to make the children's count down to Christmas a truly special experience. I've added all the Christmas and New Year dates I'm aware of to the calendar on the website and App so please take a moment to scan that. The Christmas dates are also on the noticeboards at the front and back of school.

Our Christmas Fayre - Friday 9th December from 1:55 to 4:15

Our school Christmas Fayre takes place in our school hall and Reception classes this Friday (9th December) from 1:55 to 4:15. We hope you can spend a few moments during this most hectic time of the year to join us. To clear the school hall all dinners will start 15 minutes earlier than normal with Reception lunch starting at 11:30, Years 1 & 2 at 11:45 and KS2 at 11:55. Box meals will be served on the day so that the kitchen team can clear the hall as quickly as is possible. Afternoon Nursery will be closed so that Reception children can re-locate to the Nursery and so Nursery staff can help set up the hall and Reception classrooms.

Parents and other family members can come into school through the main office entrance. Year 6 children will be on hand to collect children from classes for you. So that you don't have to queue outside for too long could you please try to arrive no earlier than the following times.

1:55 for parents of children in nursery and Reception. Older siblings can be collected with Reception age children by our Year 6 helpers. From 2:05 any parents of Year 1 and 2 children can come into school (once again older siblings can join you). From 2:15 any parents of Key Stage 2 children (that's Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) can come into school. PLEASE NOTE YOU SHOULD ONLY COME INTO SCHOOL BEFORE THE NORMAL END OF THE SCHOOL DAY IF YOU WISH TO VISIT THE CHRISTMAS FAYRE, NOT SIMPLY TO TAKE YOUR CHILDREN HOME EARLY! As the Fayre runs up to 4:15 you can of course collect your child from their normal exit at 3:15 and then pop into the hall through the front entrance. Children who have been collected from classes before the end of the school day can go home as soon as you have visited the Fayre.

Healthy Lunchboxes

Most children are now not bringing packets of crisps and chocolate wrappers into school. However for the few that still are we'll be placing a sticky label onto their lunchbox as a reminder. Our third school priority for 2016-17 is well-being and with that in mind if a child brings in a lunchbox that we feel isn't really healthy or nutritional enough we'll be outing a polite prompt sticker on their box. We won't be taking food from children or denying them eating it but without a nutritional meal afternoon learning does suffer.

Parking at Brockmoor

I don't think we'll ever get the balance right but we can I remind drivers that running late is not good enough reason to bring your car onto our car park. The first two bays by the school entrance are designated disabled bays so please do not park in these unless you are a blue badge holder.

Poppy Appeal

Thank you to all the children and families who purchased poppies and other Remembrance Day items. We managed to raise £303 for the Royal British Legion.

Nursery closures

Nursery is closed on the afternoon of Friday 9th December (for the Christmas Fayre). It is closed all day (that's both morning and afternoon sessions) on Friday 16th December so that staff can undertake home visits to the new children who will be joining us for our January intake.

Growing our School Community together

I'm delighted to announce that we have come first in our joint project for Tesco's funding with our partners from Friends of Marsh Park. Three prizes were up for grabs for the three finalists and thanks to votes placed in local Tesco mini-stores we received the first prize of £12,000! If anyone would like to know more about our growing initiative with the Friends of Marsh Park please pop into school and ask to speak to our business manager, Tracey Parsons.

Fireside and Bedtime Stories

To promote reading we're going to try something very different in the next two weeks. From 6:00 to 7:00 on Friday 9th the first twenty Year 6 children to return reply slips can come back into school in their pyjamas for fireside stories around our camp fire enclosure. They'll be toasting marshmellows, listen to a story and read themselves. Parents can have a hot drink of their own in Miss Ali's classroom which is close to the fire pit.

From 5:00 to 6:00 on Monday 12th December twenty Year 2 children can have Bedtime Stories read by the Year 2 team in Mrs Lester's classroom. Again the children can return to school in their pyjamas and bring a bedtime soft toy with them! Letters should be going out at the start of the week commencing 5th December.

Parent Voice Christmas photos

I'd like to say a huge thank you to the Parent Voice members and other helpers who have organise the setting up of a Christmas grotto in our library. Mrs Hughes has once again given up two and a half days to take photos of virtually every child in school. You'll be receiving these as part of the Children's end of term gifts to you.

What's coming over the hill? Free adult taster meals with children

In January we'll be giving parents the opportunity to come into school at 11:30 on a set day to have a free school meal with your children. The idea behind this is to encourage as many children to have a hot dinner. We'll be starting with Year 3 on the day the children return in January (that's Wednesday 4th). Year 1 will have their free meals for parents lunch at 11:30 on Thursday 5th. Reception parents can come in for a free meal with their children on Friday 6th. On Monday 9th it's the turn of Y5, on Tuesday 10th Y4 with Y2 having their opportunity on Thursday 12th. On Monday 16th we finish with Y6 parents able to have a free meal with their child at 11:30.

Bounce 4 U children's parties and holiday playschemes

One of our staff, Mrs Hamilton and her husband are now using our school hall for children's parties (which can take place on an evening or at weekends) and holiday playschemes can . As I write this section children are happily using a range of their inflatable and other engaging activities in our school hall. If you're interested in using this new business enterprise please do not hesitate in contacting the school office.

Up to Easter 2017 party packages start from £99. This includes bouncy castle, disco dome, soft play ball pit, nerf alley and more. You can find further details at the front office, on the noticeboard by the Nursery and Reception entrance, school website or at To book a party call Simon on 07824 166227.

We are trying a Christmas holiday club over the festive break. This is a chance for children to let off some pent up energy and for you to have a well earned few hours to yourself for last minute Christmas shopping. The playscheme will be running on Monday 19th December, Tuesday 20th and Wednesday 21st. You can choose either a morning session (8:45 to 11:45) or an afternoon session (12:30 - 3:30). For a single session it's £4.50 or for a whole day (including supervised lunchtime but you have to provide a packed lunch for them) it's £9. You can book a place at the school office but payment is required up front. If any session is cancelled you will, of course, receive a refund.
